Hello,

I have been trying to figure this out all night and I am very lost and frustrated. I try to install AutoTheme Lite .87 and I don't know how to do it.

FTP
As most hosting providers supply FTP access, this is likely the most common way to install CMS modules, including AutoTheme.

* Extract the compressed distribution file (.zip, .tar.gz or .sit) to your local computer
* FTP upload the entire contents to your CMS root directory (accept any directory overwrite warnings. These directories are not being overwritten. The warnings are generated because the directory already exists, but this is fine.)

Shell
If your hosting provider supplies Secure Shell (SSH) or Telnet access, this may be a quicker and easier installation method.

* Copy the compressed distribution file (.zip, .tar.gz or .sit) to your CMS root directory (the main directory where your CMS is installed)

* Extract the compressed distribution file
* unzip file.zip (zip example)
* tar zxf file.tar.gz (tar.gz example)

After installing, go to your CMS/shop Administration and follow the instructions for activating something like AutoTheme.

What does all this mean? Can you please give me a step by step detailed guide on how to do this? I am very lost and confused. I just want to put a theme on my guildportal for world of warcraft.

I got this theme from you.. http://www.spidean.com/mod-SpideanStore-detail-pid-128-star tnum-0.phtml Please help ;.;

Thanks

Well, I don't know what I can tell you other than what is in the install doc.

What CMS are you using? How did you install the CMS? What error/problem are you getting when you install AutoTheme?

Be sure to install and activate AutoTheme lite .87 from http://spidean.mckenzies.net

That is all that the email told me to do. Past that, I don't know what to do. Like I said, I am new at the situation and I don't know how to go about doing this. If I use AutoTheme Lite .87.. what do I do to install it? Do I make a new folder somewhere and go by that? I dont know how to install it. I just thought this was going to be a copy and paste sort of thing and I didn't realize this was so complicated.

You didn't answer any of my questions, but it is the same as installing the theme, it's not complicated. Unzip it, copy the contents into your web site.

I know this is rather late in the day to make a post in this thread, but it does illustrate issues regarding new users to CMS systems.

First off, their familiarity with web hosting in general (even before getting into installing CMS systems) is going to be a bit shaky to start with. I can remember when I first started...

It's not something that is particularly easy for a novice, but like any new technology, you have to get a basic functionality step by step as you build up your competency.

The first thing I deduce from the questioners' comments, is that he does not seem very confident installing modules generally, never mind Autotheme in particular, as Autotheme is just another module.

I cannot speak for other CMS Systems, but I suppose they are all similar.

It took me a while to become confident in managing a CMS system from installation to upgrading and 'tweaking'. My competency is very rough and ready rather than professional, but I can usually get there in the end. It does take persistence and patience, and not a few frustrating hours at times!

Good support is of course essential, but this is often based on community 'best effort', and this can take time, and sometimes without a 'result'.

However, I do sympathise with those who have little knowledge or experience, who want something that works 'out of the box'. There isn't anything I know which does this (yet). They all require some level of expertise; some more, some less.

This is the real life world of 'free' applications. Everyone has the choice to pay a Pro (ok, not always an option if you do not have the funds). The price for that is that you have to gan the expertise yourself by whatever means. There are a lot of resources out there, but it takes effort and patience and time. Not something everyone finds easy to do.

No point in giving a blow by blow instruction on how to install Autotheme for this guy, as he has likely moved on by now. The instructions seem clear enough to me, but if the basic knowledge of how to manage and maintain web hosting is not there, it will still seem like gobbledygook, and attempts will likely end in frustration and failure. In this respect, it is 'join the club'...
