After I buy a theme, does it become my sole property, thus only being used
ever again by me, or will the theme be available for purchase by someone
else still?

The themes are resold - so no it does not become your sole property.
Template monster does have some templates available that can be purchased
and removed from circulation, but they charge $500 to several thousands
