Remember, the goal was to keep it out of the core. You can get the most out of your HTML by having Short URLs enabled. If you need more characters, use the HTML block and write the links by hand (though this is less versatile.)

Also, be sure to know that in the boxes you don't need to put the entire address in the link, if the link is onsite. For example:

code:

A long URL is fine, but wastes characters:
http://www.yoursite.com/index.php
...so instead, use this method...
index.php
(a savings of 24 characters)

Long URLS can be shortened greatly with Short URLs. For example, on my site, this link:
index.php?module=AlarDonate&type=user&func=view&option=01
...becomes this link...
AlarDonate-view-option-01.html
(a savings of 27 characters!)

It's true that you can only make a URL so long. Again, if you need more space, use an HTML block.

John

Don't be afraid to post news of your success or failure! If someone reads this in the future, and sees that you haven't posted back, they might think that it didn't work after all, and subsequently not try it. An update posting will help users know if this solution will work in their situation. I can't speak for Shawn, but I know for me, it's greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

John

Just set up a generic menu or html block via the Blocks module...and then use permissions to control who sees what.

I'm not sure I follow...

Go to My Account -> Change Homepage

Each user can set up their own custom block with text and links there.
